On The Mend

It's now 6 weeks and two days since my surgery. I'm still having lots of pain down the outside of my knee, in my thigh and in my buttocks, but I'm walking faster and farther every day. I'm now just taking one crutch out with me but only using it if I get too tired or need something to lean on whilst I have a stretch. I'm aware that I'm not moving 'normally' and am trying to walk with a more natural rhythm, which means swinging my arms and moving my hips more. I'm sure I look a bit odd but I think I've actually forgotten how to walk like a normal person (if I ever walked like a normal person!!!).

I've only got a few days left of my recuperation. On Wednesday I'm seeing the consultant for my post-surgery check up and then on Thursday I'm flying to Dublin to stay with my lovely friend Deirdre. Back in January, as an early 50th Birthday present, she bought tickets for us to see IDLES in Iveagh Park and I've been looking forward to it ever since. Especially as I had to miss out on seeing them play at Glastonbury.

Of course I won't be able to dance just yet and will be steering well clear of the mosh pit but I'll be singing my head off and waving my arms (and one crutch) in the air. Or sheltering from the rain as the current weather forecast is heavy rain and thunder storms!!!

I had to go through medical screening to get my travel insurance as I wanted to make sure I was covered should something go wrong with my hip, so an initial premium of £7.48 increased to £35.58 for just three days cover, but better to be safe than sorry.

I also phoned the airline to request special assistance at the airport so that I don't have to stand up and queue for ages and wear myself out before I even get there. So they've organised a wheelchair for me at both ends and as a bonus for requesting special assistance you get to pre-book your seat in advance free of charge. Happy days.

The weather has been much better this week and my friends have been great at taking me out for a few hours each day down to Barry Island to eat chips, pancakes, quiche and cake and even have a paddle. Luckily I wasn't there on the day that Boris Johnson decided to visit.

The rest of the time whilst I've been at home (in between my short walks to build up my stamina and my physio) I've spent some time finally getting to grips with the design software that I bought 18 months ago. I've been watching lots of tutorials on YouTube and have been whiling away the hours designing posters (like the coffee one above) and messing around with vector graphics and typography. I've REALLY enjoyed it and look forward to learning lots more lover the next few months. I even looked into doing an online graphic design course, well it is 32 years since I dropped out of art college, so it's about time I got back into it.

Here are a couple more examples of my designs.

The words say ALL IS LOVE and there is a silhouette of a dog, but his reflection is made up of the colours of the pride rainbow
As it was the Pride parade in London yesterday I thought I'd design a PRIDE poster.
