Shocking figures today as 563 more people died in the last 24 hours bringing the known total to 2,352. I say known deaths as the figures on deaths relate to patients who have died in hospital and who have tested positive for COVID-19, but if Twitter is anything to go by people are dying in their homes alone and without being tested so the figure is going to be much, much higher.
The government is being lambasted for its failure to provide enough PPE (personal protective equipment) for frontline staff and as a fourth doctor died today. They must be petrified. The doctor who died today was recently retired and had gone back as a volunteer to help in the fight against the virus. So, so sad.
The government have stepped up the amount of testing that they are doing which means that the know number of infected has grown rapidly. As of 9am on 1 April 2020, 152,979 people have been tested, of which 29,474 were confirmed positive. The amount of tests being carried out is still woefully inadequate.
Also, the government promised 30,000 new ventilators and the amount now forecast to be delivered is just 30. WTF? The Excel Centre in London is in the process of being turned into a 4,000 bed hospital, but if there are beds without ventilators it's going to be more of a hospice really!
I had to go into work again today. It was supposed to be just for a half day, so I didn't take any lunch, but it was manic. So I was there till 4.45pm with just a 5 minute break and an orange to eat. Feeling exhausted now, but not as exhausted as the poor nurses, doctors and shop workers who are putting themselves at risk every single day.
