Well, I had to take a little break from writing the blog. One because it was just too depressing and two because I've just been exhausted from work.
On Monday March 23rd I went into work as usual. I wasn't happy about it but at least the roads were clear now that the schools have closed. A man came all the way from Hull to install our new server. I greeted him with the sanitiser bottle and he stayed 2 metres away. He told me that his 84 year old Dad who has leukaemia was I the garden centre yesterday. These oldies are just not taking it seriously.
The boss came in and said that she would be leaving at lunch time and working from home from then on. She wants a maximum of three people in the office at any one time. I'm working from home. Hurrah! There was so much to do in readiness and people are still asking for quotes and instructing us, so I didn't get to leave until 6.00pm. I got back to the car and just sat there relieved that I could stay home from now on.
Later on that day it was announced that Boris would be addressing the nation at 8.30pm. We all knew what was coming. Boris, watched by 25 million people, announced a lock down of sorts. It was still a bit wishy-washy. The main points were:
You can leave the house to go shopping for essentials, but do this as infrequently as possible
You can leave the house for one period of exercise per day
You can leave the house to go to work but only if absolutely necessary
You can leave the house for medical reasons or to care for vulnerable people
The next day there were images of packed tube trains and construction sites with hundreds of people working on them. The government was urged to be more specific. Some constructors decided to cancel building work of their own accord.
The first day of working from home was a bit hectic. I went out for a two mile walk at 7.00am then knuckled down. I had loads to do and didn't take enough breaks so ended with a cold mouse hand and a numb bum. The WhatsApp group was pinging non-stop and I was worn out by the end of the day. I had a nice long bath and an early night.
Today was day 2 of working at home. Still busy, but I took more breaks and even managed to use the stepper in the garden. It was a gorgeous sunny day so as soon as 5.00pm arrived I went out for my daily exercise. I spoke to two woman walking their dogs. Actual humans, it feels weird already. I feel like I've been working from home forever. Can't wait for a little downtime. I FaceTimed mum and dad in the evening and they FINALLY seem to be taking it seriously. Praise the lord.
As for figures the number of known infected in the UK, now including HRH Prince Charles, stands at 9,529 and the number of deaths 468. A 21 year old girl with no underlying health conditions is one of the victims. Hopefully that will make the youngsters take it more seriously. However a friend is West Wales says that the police had to be called today as an ice-cream van rocked up in town and started selling.
On the plus side off-licences have now been deemed as 'essential'. Apparently the supermarkets were running out of booze now that the pubs have closed. My friend says she ordered booze from a small off-licence in Caerphilly. She paid online, pulled up outside, honked the horn and the man came out and put it in her boot. She got home, wiped it all down and hey presto, she's enjoying a glass of wine tonight. In fact, I think I might join her. It's only a Wednesday but these are strange days!
