July 22nd - the world's gone crazy

Updated: Mar 28, 2022

The lockdown continues to ease and hairdressers have now been allowed to open. I haven't booked an appointment yet, I thought I'd let the desperate people get their done first.  Even though my hair is the longest it has been in a very long time.

What I have booked though is a holiday! Just three days camping at a secluded site near Abergavenny. It looks fantastic and was in the Guardian's top ten secluded camp sites. Here it is https://middleninfa.co.uk .

Pubs are allowed to open indoors from August 3rd so hopefully I'll be able to go to a pub whilst I'm there too. Mind you I will only be going if they are quiet. I've heard lots of horror stories on Twitter and Facebook of people getting drunk and being unable to social distance. Or of abusing the bar staff because they are wearing masks. Some morons even held a demonstration in London at the weekend to protest against the wearing of masks which becomes compulsory in shops in England on Friday. A hundred or so people gathered to protest again the crackdown on their civil liberties. They say they are not "anti-masks" but "pro-choice", and their choice is not to wear a mask. Pricks! It's still voluntary in Wales but I always wear mine at the supermarket.

The number of people infected with coronavirus worldwide passed 15 million today, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Nearly 618,000 deaths have been recorded, with the US accounting for 142,000 of them.

The government said 45,501 people have died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm yesterday, up by 79 from the day before.

Today it's been reported that new mutation in the coronavirus is helping outbreaks spread faster around the world.

Professor Nick Loman, from the University of Birmingham, who is part of the Covid-19 Genomics Consortium, said the new strand, known as D614G, has become the most dominant around the world.

Yet so many people out there are going about their business as though the pandemic has ended.

Huge groups of teenagers are roaming the streets getting up to mischief. The beach in Barry is rammed and the police have had to patrol down there due to numerous incidences of drinking and anti-social behaviour by youths. They seem to think that they are invincible and that the virus can't touch them. I can't bloody wait till they all go back to school.

The roads are getting much busier now. I left work at 5.15pm today (the earliest I've left for months now!) and it was all backlogged through Dinas Powys. The housing market has gone bonkers. We are so, so busy. Luckily the furloughed staff are back (part time) so that is helping my stress levels. The government in England and Wales have introduced Stamp Duty /LTT holidays until March next year to encourage the housing market. However we are all very aware that with many businesses closing and people being made redundant there could be a huge crash and recession on its way. Something to look forward to, along with Brexit and climate change and the second wave!

I saw my friend Sarah last weekend. I went and sat in her garden for a few hours and we had a Chinese takeaway. It didn't really feel like I hadn't seen her for months as we have been Zooming a lot. It was strange not greeting her with a hug though.

My parents are currently of the opinion that this virus isn't half as bad as they've been saying and that the current death figures are inflated. I'm inclined to believe the exact opposite. If this government open their mouths it's generally to tell a lie. I did shake my head in disbelief when I saw these two new reports pop up alongside each other last week.

There are spikes in various areas around the country and Leicester had to go back into full lockdown last week. Other hotspots are Weston-super-mare, Bradford and Barrow-in-Furness. And bizarrely 19 positive cases of coronavirus have been linked to an outbreak that started at a Motherwell Track and Trace call centre.

So I'm still staying in as much as possible. Social distancing, wearing a mask and avoiding crowded places. It's hard but you can't trust other people to keep their distance and I still love my own company and never get bored, but I am looking forward to a change of scenery on my camping trip. I just hope the weather holds.
